Spotlight on Child Development and Care in the Early Years

As part of our continuing programme spotlight series, we’re focusing on another highly valuable Key Stage 4 vocational qualification: the NCFE CACHE Level 1/2 Technical Award in Child Development and Care in the Early Years.

Designed for learners aged 14–16, this qualification offers a practical and engaging introduction to child development, early years care and the responsibilities of working with young children.

It is an excellent option for schools looking to provide meaningful alternatives to GCSEs, particularly for learners interested in childcare, education, health and social care or future careers in the early years sector.

What will learners study?

This qualification helps learners build a strong understanding of how children grow, develop and are supported during their early years. Key topics include:

🌱 Child development and holistic development

Learners explore the stages of child development, including physical, cognitive, communication and language, and social and emotional development. This helps them to understand how children grow and change over time.

🧬 Factors that influence development

Learners examine how both nature and nurture can affect a child’s development, including biological influences and environmental factors such as family, lifestyle and experiences.

🔄 Transitions during childhood

Learners explore expected and unexpected transitions in a child’s life, such as starting nursery or school, moving home, family changes or bereavement, and how these experiences can affect development.

🧸 Care routines, play and activities

Learners will discover how daily care routines, play opportunities and planned activities support children’s wellbeing, learning and development.

🏡 Early years provision and settings

Learners investigate different types of childcare and early years settings, including nurseries, pre-schools, childminders and reception classes, and the role each plays in supporting children and families.

📋 Legislation, policies and procedures

Learners will develop an understanding of safeguarding, health and safety, equality and inclusion, and the legal responsibilities involved in working in an early years setting.

🤝 The role of the early years practitioner

Learners explore the expectations, responsibilities and professional behaviours required when working with children and families.

📝 Observation and planning

Finally, learners will discover the importance of observing children’s development and using this information to plan activities and support individual needs effectively.
